A song based on a letter
A letter usually addresses one person directly, and precisely that closeness can carry a song. The salutation, an unexpected confession or a simple closing sentence can be the starting point, without having to follow the whole letter word for word.
The sentence you kept rereading
On paper, something important can suddenly sit between two ordinary messages: an apology, a thank-you, a long-postponed question. Choose that centre of gravity and build around it. The letter form may stay recognisable, but private data or side issues don't have to come along when they distract from what the writer wanted to say.
Share the letter or relevant passages, the sender and recipient and the occasion. Which sentences are indispensable, what stays private and may the song address directly or rather look back?
